Lesser Known Arboviruses Symposium I
Bluetongue virus (BTV), epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV), and African horse sickness virus (AHSV) are in the family orbiviridae and they are of significant importance to the health of wildlife and domestic animals worldwide. These viruses are transmitted by multiple biting midge (Culicoides) species and their epidemiology is changing as the climate warms. The changes include increased geographic range expansion, more frequent outbreaks, and changes to biting midge species vector competency. As the climate changes, Orbivirus epidemiology will be inextricably altered as has been seen with recent outbreaks of BT, EHD, and AHS outside of endemic areas, and requires interdisciplinary teams and approaches to assess and mitigate future outbreak threats.
